What is Skrewball Whiskey?

Skrewball is a peanut butter-flavored whiskey, it’s on the sweet side, but not too sweet, with subtle notes of peanut butter. I found in numerous places that it actually has no added sugar. It’s not only delicious on it’s own, neat or just on ice. According to the National Peanut Board’s Skrewball article, it’s is a 70-proof whiskey, made with real peanuts. Since it’s debut in 2018 it has made quite stir in the beverage world, even winning double gold medals in 2019 at the New York World Wine & Spirits competition for “Best flavored whiskey”.

The Story of Skrewball

The background of the peanut butter-flavored whiskey has a very cool and inspiring story in itself; an American dream. The founding creators are a husband and wife team from Ocean Beach in San Diego, California. The husband, Mr. Yeng is a Cambodian refugee and fell in love with the taste of peanut butter from the moment he first tried it in the United States as a little boy. His story is inspiring from being a wheelchair-bound child to a restauranteur. He incorporated peanut butter into his restaurant menu, from food to drinks. One of their most popular items was a peanut butter and whiskey shot made with Jameson. That’s how the idea to create a peanut butter-flavored whiskey came to be. The name “Skrewball” came from Mr. Yeng’s background. It’s a dedication to the “black sheep” (hence the cool black sheep as the logo) and “misfits” of the world; referring to himself and his immigrant upbringing in the U.S. Mr. and Mrs. Yeng successfully created the very first peanut butter-flavored whiskey in the world. It’s a great story how Skrewball came about. If you’d like to learn more about them, here’s the official Story of Skrewball.

How to Serve a Peanut Butter White Russian

This is a decadent cocktail that’s simple to make. You can elevate the drink and get creative with the rim of the glass by adding a little simple syrup, chocolate syrup or even a little peanut butter. Then dip the wet rim in a little espresso salt or even peanut butter flavored salt. My husband had the idea of mixing the espresso salt with a little bit of peanut butter powder to give it a twist. I added a touch of brown sugar to the mixture you see below.

White Russian Variations

What better way to a add a twist to a classic White Russian Cocktail than with the nutty flavor of Skrewball? (Pun intended) A classic white Russian consists of vodka, coffee liqueur and heavy cream. It’s one of those delicious cocktails with notes of caramel you have to try at least once in your life if you like creamy drinks. The addition of peanut butter flavor with good ol’ whiskey just makes sense. Although, I’m not sure if the “the Dude” from Big Lebowski would agree. He had his own variation of the creamy cocktail. I do not recommend adding powdered coffee creamer to your white Russian as he did. Ick!

Skrewball White Russian Ingredients

  • Peanut Butter Whiskey– Skrewball is the Original peanut butter-flavored whiskey and might be the finest, but it’s not always in stock. It is pricier as well, so sometimes you just need to find an alternative. There are some others: Bird Dog, Two Trees & Sqrrl to name a few.
  • Vodka– I incorporate vodka instead of just replacing the vodka with the whiskey because it’s not really a white Russian without its main ingredient, vodka. You can use whatever you like and have on hand. I like Tito’s, Ketal One and Kirkland. Those are what I usually just have on hand.
  • Coffee Liqueur– Kahlua, Mr. Black, Kapali or Tia Maria
  • Heavy Whipping Cream– What’s a White Russian without heavy cream? A Black Russian cocktail of course. But seriously, if you don’t have heavy cream, you can use half & half or just whole milk if you’re missing the latter. Don’t expect it to be the same creamier drink you were hoping for though.
    • Lactose Intolerant Swap Out– If you want to swap out the heavy cream for soda water you’ll have a peanut butter “mind eraser.” Just saying…
  • Salt (Optional)- This is totally your choice, but salt has the amazing quality of intensifying flavors and sweetness. I love espresso salt on a drink like this.

My new favorite!! This cocktail was THE perfect way to kick off the holidays! Genius! So creamy and comforting. The peanut butter flavor was the perfect addition – not overpoweringly peanut butter-y. Just a perfect addition. This is definitely going to be on of the go to cocktails in my house! I can’t wait to try the frozen version next!

    • Awesome, Heather! I’m so glad you enjoyed it and it’ll be your “go-to.” Great to hear it helped you kick off the holidays as well! Cheers and Happy Holidays!
