It’s almost the 4th of July! Here’s a great way to celebrate a Patriotic holiday at an outdoor party, out by the pool or outdoor gathering. Cool off with these ice cold, all natural and tasty treats! These popsicles might be cute for kids, but there’s no reason the adults can’t enjoy them as well. They’re made with real fruit and colored by mother nature.
Red, White & Blue-ish~with No Food Color!
I’m such a stickler for fake food that even when it comes to sweets, especially if I feed it to kids, I want it to come from real ingredients. Mother nature is so colorful on her own, I just don’t see why we can’t create tasty natural good sweets with real ingredients. Real berries and fruit have all sorts of color and great sweetness without the need for unnatural additives.
For the red layer, I use a combination of strawberries & cherries. For the white layer I use a partially green banana, coconut milk and coconut flakes. The blue layer is probably obvious, blueberries (ok, so I know it looks more purplish than blue, but that’s the best I could do with what mother nature gave me).
Only as Sweet as Nature
Just remember that your finished red, white and blue tasty beauties will only be as sweet as the good produce you use. If you use unripe non-organic fruit, they’ll probably be a little underwhelming vs using good organic fruit with good color and stronger natural sweetness. I love using frozen berries for recipes like this because A) They’re much less expensive, especially if you’re buying them organic and B) they’re just so darn convenient. Just pop them in your blender along with your other ingredients and you’ve got instant delicious sweetness for popsicles such as these or smoothies. I’ve also found the frozen organic berries to be quite sweet and flavorful on their own without needing to add a lit more honey or sugar.
Popsicle Molds
There are so many cool and fun popsicle molds out there now. Â I happen to like and use these Sailboat and Rocket popsicle molds
that I got from Costco as a 2 pack.  Amazon has a slew of other great multicolor popsicle molds to choose from as well since the sailboats might not be available anymore.  If you’ve never made homemade popsicles you really need to give it a shot.  It’s as easy as throwing everything in a blender to make a smoothie and pour it in the molds.  The best thing is you know exactly what’s in them.
Patriotic Party
If you like these popsicles and just need to make a festive patriotic treat for other Patriotic holidays or maybe a party for a troop returning home, blend it up and make this natural treat without all the chemicals and junk of most store bought popsicles. Besides tasting great, they’ll impress with their look, especially if you’re not much of a baker.
Give these Patriotic Pops a try and enjoy a cool healthy treat on a warm fun day!
Patriotic Pops (All Natural Red, White & Blue-ish Popsicles)
Ingredients
Divided Colors:
Blue Layer
- 2 cups organic Blueberries fresh or frozen
- 1/4 cup full fat unsweetened coconut milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tsp raw local honey or to taste
White Layer
- This is the runniest layer, but it freezes just great and looks nice and white
- 1 large slightly green banana fresh or frozen (if you're ok with dairy, feel free to replace some banana and/or coconut milk with full fat plain yogurt or vanilla ice cream which is what I do sometimes)
- 1/2 cup full fat unsweetened coconut milk
- 1/4 cup water
- 3 heaping Tbsp coconut flakes unsweetened if you can find it (if using unsweetened, add 1 Tsp honey, if already sweetened, no need for honey)
Red Layer:
- 1 1/2 cup organic Strawberries hulled, fresh or frozen
- 1/2 cup organic Cherries pitted, fresh or frozen (you can use all strawberries if you like, I just like the addition of sweet cherries for flavor)
- 1/4 cup full fat unsweetened coconut milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tsp raw local honey or to taste
Instructions
- Place all ingredients for Blue Layer in blender. Pulse until smooth. (This is the thickest layer, almost like a smoothie consistency)
- Use a narrow Tbsp measuring spoon to carefully pour the blue layer into the lower 1/3 portion of your popsicle molds
- Wipe excess mixture off sides of molds with paper towel
- Place partially filled popsicle molds (with NO stick) in freezer for 30 minutes (just to set and harden to touch)
- Pull out popsicle molds and blend the White Layer in a bender. If you want to thicken it more you can add a little more banana, but be careful not to add too much to lose your white shade
- Fill molds with the White Layer up 2/3 of the way
- Place partially filled popsicle molds (with NO stick) in freezer for 30 minutes (just to set and harden to touch)
- Blend up the final Red Layer and then fill your popsicle molds to the "fill line" most likely marked on your molds and carefully push the mold sticks into your molds. Don't worry if you hear a little crunching or get a little mixture movement
- Place fully filled popsicle molds into the freezer for a final minimum 4 hr freeze.
- Once final freeze complete, run a little warm water on sides of molds to help loosen the molds. Squeeze molds to help loosen and slowly pull out popsicle with mold stick and Enjoy!
